  2. Make the Cupcakes

In a bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

  3. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, followed by the vanilla extract.

  4. In a separate bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, and salt.

  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the milk, starting and ending with the dry ingredients.

  6. Mix until just combined.

  7. Divide the batter evenly into the cupcake liners.

  8. Bake for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

  9. Allow the cupcakes to cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

  10. Make the Buttercream Frosting

In a large bowl, beat the butter until creamy.

  11. Gradually add the powdered sugar, 100 g (3.5 oz) at a time, mixing well after each addition.

  12. Stir in the vanilla extract and milk, beating until smooth and fluffy.

  13. Remove about ¼ of the frosting to use as the white trim.

  14. Tint the remaining frosting with red gel food coloring, mixing until you achieve a bright red color.

  15. Decorate the Cupcakes

Fit a piping bag with a large round tip and fill it with the red frosting.

  16. Pipe the red frosting onto each cupcake in a swirl pattern to resemble a Santa hat.

  17. Use a small star tip for the white frosting, piping a border around the base of the hat and a small tuft at the top to complete the Santa hat look.
