A Little History of Fish Pie

Fish pie is a traditional British dish that has a long history dating back to the medieval times. Originally, it was a way for households to use up leftover fish and it was a popular dish among the lower classes.
The dish typically consists of a pastry crust filled with a mixture of cooked fish, usually cod, salmon or haddock, mixed with vegetables such as peas, carrots, and potatoes and a creamy sauce.

In the 19th century, fish pie became more popular among the middle and upper classes, and it was often served as a main course during large dinner parties.
Today, it is still a popular dish in the UK, and it can be found in many restaurants and pubs.
The recipe has also evolved, and many variations exist, including the addition of different types of fish, seafood, and cheese, and the use of mashed potatoes as a topping instead of a pastry crust.

  1. Preheat the oven

    to 180°C (350°F).

  2. Place the potatoes in a large pot and cover with water.

  3. Bring to a boil and cook until tender, about 15-20 minutes.
Drain and mash the potatoes with some butter, salt and pepper.

  4. In a separate pan, melt the remaining butter over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.

  5. Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes. Gradually stir in the milk, bring to a simmer and cook until thickened, about 5 minutes.

  6. Add the fish, peas, and cheese to the sauce, and season with salt and pepper to taste.

  7. Pour the mixture into a baking dish and spread the mashed potatoes on top.

  8. Bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.

  9. Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.

    Enjoy, Good Appetite!
