This

cake draws on the popular idea of “dirt cakes,” which became a hit in the U.S. around the 1980s. Traditionally, dirt cakes use crushed Oreos to mimic dirt, and gummy worms are often added to give it a playful, earthy feel.
The Halloween version of this classic takes it a step further by adding ghoulish decorations like candy skulls, bones, and pumpkins, making it the perfect centerpiece for any Halloween party.

The beauty

of this cake is its simplicity—while it looks intricate, it’s actually easy to make. The rich chocolate flavor pairs perfectly with the crunchy “dirt” and chewy candy decorations, creating a fun mix of textures. Plus, you can get creative with how you decorate it.
Whether you’re hosting a party or just want a Halloween-themed dessert, this Halloween Chocolate Dirty Cake will definitely impress!

Ingredients

For The Sponge

For Chocolate Cream Frosting

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
Grease and line two 20cm (8-inch) round cake pans.

  2. Make the Sponge

In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

  3. Add the eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until smooth.

  4. Slowly add the boiling water while mixing. The batter will be thin, but that’s normal.

  5. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  6. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

  7. Prepare the Chocolate Frosting

In a large bowl, beat the butter on high speed until creamy.

  8. Gradually add the powdered sugar and cocoa powder while mixing on low speed. Once combined, increase to high speed and mix for about 2 minutes.

  9. Add the heavy cream and vanilla extract, and continue to beat until smooth and fluffy.

  10. Assemble the Cake

Once the cakes have cooled completely, level the tops with a knife if necessary.

  11. Spread a layer of chocolate frosting on top of one cake layer, then place the second cake layer on top.

  12. Frost the entire outside of the cake with the remaining chocolate frosting, smoothing it out evenly.

  13. Decorate the Cake

Crush the Oreo cookies to create a “dirt” effect and sprinkle them over the frosted cake.

  14. Add gummy worms, skulls, bones, and pumpkins on top. Place ghost fondant shapes and other edible Halloween decorations.

  15. Scatter some sprinkles and candy for extra spooky vibes.

    Enjoy, Good Appetite!
    Happy Halloween!
