The Best Chicken Parmesan
In the heart of Italy, where culinary traditions run deep, there lies a dish that has transcended borders and delighted taste buds for generations – Chicken Parmesan. This delectable masterpiece is not just a meal, it’s a journey through history, flavor, and pure comfort.
Let’s take a bite into the past and explore the origins and the irresistible recipe of authentic Chicken Parmesan.
A Slice of History
Chicken Parmesan, or ‘Pollo alla Parmigiana’ in its native Italian language, hails from the sun-kissed region of Campania. Its roots can be traced back to the mid-20th century, where humble ingredients were transformed into a symphony of taste.
Contrary to popular belief, this dish’s inspiration didn’t emerge from the bustling streets of Naples, but rather from the kitchens of Italian immigrants in the United States.
These immigrants brought their cherished culinary traditions to America, adapting to the available ingredients and resources. It was in the vibrant neighborhoods of New York City, notably in Little Italy, where the Americanised version of Chicken Parmesan took its first savory breaths.
The essence of Italy remained intact, but now it was infused with the melting pot of American culture.

The Art of Authenticity
Creating an authentic Chicken Parmesan is a labor of love, starting with the finest ingredients. Tender chicken breasts are meticulously breaded, each layer carefully seasoned to perfection. The secret sauce, a tomato-based masterpiece, is a tribute to the rich and robust flavors of Italy.
Sprinkled with aromatic basil, oregano, and a touch of garlic, it’s a tantalizing symphony of taste.
But the true magic happens when the golden-brown chicken emerges from the skillet, crowned with a duet of Parmesan and mozzarella cheese.
As it bakes, the cheese bubbles and caramelizes, creating a melty, gooey crust that blankets the chicken in comfort.
A Slice of Heaven on Your Plate
Every bite of Chicken Parmesan is a savory explosion of flavors and textures. The crispy exterior gives way to succulent, juicy chicken, while the cheese melds with the zesty tomato sauce, creating a harmonious blend that dances on your taste buds.
Served atop a bed of pasta or nestled between a fresh Italian roll, this dish is a celebration of comfort food.

Pound the chicken breasts between two sheets of plastic wrap or parchment paper until they are about 1.27 cm (½ inch) thick.
Season the chicken breasts on both sides with salt and black pepper.
In separate shallow dishes, place the flour in one, whisk the eggs in another, and combine the breadcrumbs, 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, and 1/2 cup mozzarella cheese in a third.
Dredge each chicken breast in the flour, making sure to shake off excess, then dip into the beaten eggs, and finally coat with the breadcrumb mixture.
Press the breadcrumbs onto the chicken to ensure they adhere.
Heat olive oil in a large ovenproof skillet over medium-high heat.
Add the breaded chicken breasts and cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side until they are golden brown and cooked through.
Remove the chicken from the skillet and set aside.
In the same skillet, add the tomato sauce, chopped basil, chopped parsley, dried oregano, garlic powder, and red pepper flakes (if using).
Simmer for a few minutes until the sauce is heated through.
Return the cooked chicken to the skillet, spoon some sauce over each piece, and top with the remaining Parmesan and mozzarella cheese.
Place the skillet in the preheated oven and bake for about 20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly, and the chicken is heated through.
Garnish with additional fresh basil and parsley if desired before serving.
